Stained Glass Basic Facts and Jargon

Strictly speaking, only glass to which paint and stain have been applied should be called stained glass. This process is always fairly expensive. A bird painting of six inches diameter, for example, might cost £50.00 or more depending on how much detail is required. Panels made out of coloured glass no matter how intricate are simply referred to as leaded or decorative and are much cheaper. Windows containing only rectangles or diamond shaped pieces are said to be made of 'quarries'. Tie bars or saddle bars are metal rods that help support the panel. They are usually horizontal - sometimes vertical and need to be set at each end into the frame, not simply into the rebate. Small pieces of copper wire are soldered at their centres to the lead of the panel and then the ends are twisted firmly behind the bar to hold the panel in place. The system may seem primitive but it works well and unless the panels are narrow, is essential on a front door. Don't worry if you mix all these terms up -  it really doesn't matter!

Should you decide to use our services the normal sequence of events is as follows;

  1. After a discussion a design is agreed.
  2. You give us the approximate sizes required.
  3. We quote a firm price and if you accept the quote you then pay a one third deposit.
  4. We come to your house / church / business to take exact sizes, check on the light levels and see if there are any design features which we should be aware of.
  5. We draw up full size plans and the colours are agreed.
  6. We make the panels and if you wish, fit them for you.
  7. You pay us the balance due.
